HR Professional of the Year -- 2009

The 2009 HR Professional of the Year has been most entertaining to get to know.  This person has been a member of COHR for only just over a year, but in that time, has provided a great amount of enthusiasm and time to dedicate to the advancement of other professionals.  This person approaches life and the responsibilities of the profession with great humor and a positive attitude.

The HR Professional of the Year has been employed with a local company 5 years as of last month as an HR Generalist, providing recruiting, compensation and employee relations support to more than 800 employees and management.  His previous experience in HR has primarily been in the staffing industry, where he became a master of recruiting providing on-site staffing support to three large New York City financial firms.  He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Marketing from Stockton College in NJ and his name is John Williamson.

John holds the Senior Professional in Human Resources designation from SHRM and is employed with BlueCross BlueShield of SC.

His Manager at Blue Cross, Julie Schlosser says, when it comes to describing John, I’d have to say he’s the most self-motivated person I know.  He is the first to come up with a new idea and the first to implement it. He is highly versatile and flexible to meet the challenges he faces daily.  He has challenged and assisted our HR team with becoming better, faster and more efficient.

The managers and employees John supports never have to wait for a response from him. Managers describe him as professional, articulate and responsible.

Not only does John have a good work ethic, John also has a heart for those less fortunate than him.  In 2005, when Katrina devastated New Orleans, John was one of the first BlueCross employees to offer his time as a Red Cross volunteer. He spent 3 weeks in New Orleans to help its citizens get through the most difficult times in their lives. John had also worked at MDA in Wilmington for three years and worked hard fundraising for children and adults alike facing devastating medical diagnoses.

John has immersed himself in the HR field by utilizing all the resources available to him. John also gives as much back to the people that have helped and supported him.  In John’s time with COHR as the Certification Chair, he has supported his peers by providing countless hours of his time to anyone interested in pursuing their HR certification.  Additionally, John set up and led the training of close to 100 unemployed people on resume development and electronic job search techniques.

On the personal side, John is a very funny and lively person.  His team certainly feels his absence when he’s not around which usually means he’s in Disney World.  He’s brought a lot of life to the BlueCross HR team and the COHR Board. John can always be counted on when something needs to be done.

Please join me in congratulating the 2009 HR Professional of the YearJohn Williamson.
